OUR UTOPIA - Our Journals #1

OUR UTOPIA - by Damola Olagunju Music. Music doesn’t just sing to the ears It dances with the soul We connect with the type of music we listen to in some way We find ways to imagine and relate with the songs we love Everyone fancies a type of music It could be the sounds your feet makes as it fights the ground that makes you want to dance Or the annoying sounds flies make when buzzing around you It could be the soothing sounds of the wind as they ignore but disturb the trees. Music doesn’t have to have lyrics to amuse you I don’t think there is a thing as a meaningless song A song could be chanting gibberish for all I care As long as it gets my soul grooving It is Music. Love Love isn’t easy We all know that but do you believe that? Love takes commitment Like seriously a lot of it. Love is cliché but not all clichés are silly For example the interesting cliché of college dropouts being incre

Diary Entry of a College Kid - Episode #1

Image
So, I've graduated, now what? I mean, from High School, not college, mind you. I've still got about five ears to do that, so no worries. It's been one semester in college and this is wh The good, the bad, and the very questionable, I can't believe this happened, but I better well get through it with God part. I call it part, because I couldn't end that with - able. So, a few lessons picked up by me in these last few months that I'd like to share with you; 1. Never leave food over night in your back pack. It's going to spill everywhere, and cause a mess, and your bag will smell like rotten rice for a week, and you won't be able to turn in your homework. Just, don't do it. Bad, overall bad. Not good. 2. Food is necessary, food is bae. I realize I've only talked about food in these first two items, and that's because, well - I was hungry a lot this semester, and wanted to share that with you. Also, I'm trying to lighten the moo

Alessia Cara - A Reminiscence

Image
Alessia Caraciollo,  known by Alessia Cara, the name we've all come to love her by is turning twenty one today and the pop star from Missisauga has gone a long way from you tube videos to releasing her first album. The down-to-earth, and relatable now legal adult, with the loved voice impersonations, released her album Know-it-all two years ago and has gotten a massive amount of  feedback on it. Her album touched deeply on the teen experience and took emotions, personal experiences, things that we'd all dealt with at some point or another and turned it into this playlist of songs you had to listen to on repeat, because of how much you felt it. Not to mention her beautiful voice, for those of us who are obsessed! Since then, it's  been uphill for her.We realize it's been quite a journey for the twenty one year old and would like to commemorate her day with something to inspire teens, inspired by her mission to spread a message through her music. So, we talked to

Scientists Have Figured Out Why Shoelaces Untie Themselves!

Image
So, your shoelaces weirdly untie themselves while you're running, or walking, and you end up tripping. We've mostly come to accept this as normal, even though it is a bit tiring to have to stop every few meters to retie a pair of especially slippery laces.  Why though, do shoelaces untie themselves so easily? Researchers  at University Of California Berkely - Graduate student Christine Gregg, Christopher Daily-Diamond and their professor Oliver O'Reily teamed together to find out.. They eventually published their findings on April 12 in Proceedings of the Royal Society A. The trio decided they would try to figure it out by recording Christine Gregg, a co-author of the study, and also a runner on a treadmill while she ran. Capturing the movements of her feet with a  camera that took 900 frames per second.      They noticed that as Christine ran, her feet hitting the floor of the treadmill struck the ground at about seven times the force of gravity. The knot stre

Why Teens Need More Sleep Than They Get

Image
So, a common case scenario. The night before school, you're lying in bed texting your best friend. You guys had an amazing day out and even though you promised yourself you'd go to bed at ten o'clock, the conversation is too good to pass up. Eventually, you fall asleep at 12:14 and end up waking up at 6:30 like you always do and it's awful. You're drowsy, tired, bleary eyed and not in the mood. Nearly half dead, you've gotten yourself out of bed, struggled to get yourself ready and found your way to school. Throughout the entire day you find yourself struggling to pay attention for more than thirty minutes, taking naps at intervals and getting in trouble with at least two teachers for falling asleep. Sound familiar? That's because it is. Only 15% of teenagers admit to getting at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night, and the rest who don't, have attributed their lack of sleep to their low moods and depressive spells. The effects of lack of

Why Do I Keep Loosing Just One Sock From A Pair?

Image
You take out your laundry - you're sure of exactly how many clothes you have in that pile. Your T-shirt that you've worn four times in the last week, your underwear, your two trousers, a few tank tops, and three pairs of socks. At least you were sure you had all three pairs when the pile went into the washing machine. Somehow, you get your clothes back and a sock is mysteriously missing. Gone, to join the other lost socks, in the abyss of your washing machine, or the floor of the road to your washing machine, or maybe your underwear drawer because you never really took it out in the first place.          Well, weirdly enough scientists seem to have have figured out exactly what goes  into why your socks go missing as often as they do. So much so that there's actually a mathematical formula! So no Steven Hawking spontaneous black hole theory, no gremlins, just math and logic. According to Samsung's Adwash Research Post, which you can read here , this is the

Your Talents Haven't Gone Anywhere, Even If You Don't Think So

Image
So, it's a noticeable thing that as we grow older, people seem to stop doing the things they love. The things that make them happy. It's like in the midst of school, and part time jobs, interning, paying bills and living like parents, we forget there are things we actually like to do. That life hasn't always been a jumble of making sure we have enough money to afford  food, and that the talents we used to have, that we forgot about, are somehow still inside of us and haven't died with our "what if's" and "I don't think I have time right now".      It's weird how when these talents leave us for such a long time,  you start to feel slightly  guilty - even though despite the guilt you don't start using them again. You don't suddenly decide one morning, I'm going to start today. No matter how long the nagging goes on. Why? I think it's because inside us we're all  scared, and somehow afraid. Because as

10 Things I Wish I Had Known At Seventeen - Series (Part 2)

Image
There are a few things I wish I would have been able to tell myself when I was Seventeen because they would definitely have helped make life easier. So now that you're seventeen, as you read this,  think of it as a letter from your future self: to you: 1.  Learn to save money, it's really going to help you in the future. You don't need to get everything you want. Most of them you can live without, and eventually you might be able to save up for that trip to Spain you've always wanted. 2.  Take care of yourself. Build good hygiene habits; brushing your teeth, taking your bath every morning. A lot of college students fall into the ritual of deodorant. No one wants to walk around, or beside someone who smells like a potent plant. You can only cover up so much odor with deodorant. 3.  Study, like your life depends on it. Because in a way it does. Imagine spending all that money  in school and coming out of it and not remembering anyt
